A letter from January 2nd, 2023

Time Travelled — 12 months

Peaceful right?

Dear FutureMe, I am writing this on the 2nd of January 2023 at exactly 4am, new year celebrations have just finished and I’m currently having an existential crisis after talking to Niki. We were at one point just talking about our grandparents and suddenly we’re onto the topic of global warming and before you know it, we’re talking about evolution and then how insignificant I was. Think about it the universe is so big and it continues to expand, in the grand scheme of things, I don’t matter, I’m not even a dot in the universe. In no way shape or form is my life significant to this universe (like not in a depressing way). But what I realised is that I may not matter in the grand scheme of things but I matter in my society, the smaller scheme (much much MUCH smaller) if anything I do is not gonna affect the grand scheme of things why should it matter what I do? Until I noticed that whatever I do affects my smaller society and that I’m trapped in this society (which is not a good thing nor a bad thing). But hypothetically if you removed this smaller scheme, this society, then you’re just left with the grand scheme, the universe, and then you’re truly nothing. I came to the conclusion that me, you, we don’t matter in the grand scheme, we’re nothing, we’re so insignificant. But it’s the smaller society that we matter in, that we’re something in, in this society we can bring a change and we’re not so insignificant as your actions have an impact on this society. At this point I’m just blabbing… Sorry future me, you’re gonna read this and be weirded out about what past you was thinking. So to me a year in the future, how is life? How were your GCSEs? Do good? 2024 just hit huh? Gotta start thinking about uni now, and you’ll be turning 18! Good luck Love from 16 year old San!
